Another year gone. A year ago, at the end of 2016, I was finishing editing a bunch of episodes in to prepare to launch The Own Up Grown-Up podcast. I had no idea what to expect. I just knew that this is something I wanted to try. Worth it? Yes!
This was one of my big goals for 2017. On my vision board, I wrote (in green sharpie) INTENTIONAL LIVING ((PODCAST)). Well, thankfully that name didn’t stick but I hope you’re as happy as I have been with the result.
This final episode of 2017 is about goal-setting and a technique I learned from Danielle Laporte that I’m going to implement more this year. It applies especially to those looking to make big life changes (like working from home). This is a short episode, but I think it’ll get you planning better for 2018.
“The surest sign that you’re working with the life-affirming kind of discipline, rather than the spirit-depressing kind, is that you don’t complain very much about doing what it takes.” —Danielle Laporte
I highly recommend Danielle’s book, “The Desire Map,” which has been my favourite goal-setting book so far. I learned about this technique last year (you can listen to Quinn Abbey’s interview to learn more) and beyond any other type of goal-setting I’ve done, it’s worked the best.
One thing I’ve learned from starting a blog and an online business is that you can’t just hope things will turn out. Putting pictures on the wall or writing things in your journal you’d like to manifest is just wishful thinking. It doesn’t really help you achieve anything. If you want things to happen in your life—and this is something a lot of guests on this podcast have expressed—you have to start taking action, little steps at a time, that will lead you closer to achieving what you want to achieve.
Danielle’s technique is all about choosing how you want to feel, and allowing that to be the lens through which you say yes to some things and no to others.
Personal example: Most of us want to lose weight, and this year I did too. More than that, I wanted to experience vitality, one of the Core Desired Feelings I uncovered going through “The Desire Map“. I wanted to feel energetic and treat my body with more respect and care. It took all year, but slowly I started making exercise a habit, which had the unexpected effect of making me want to eat and sleep better. Unlike before, where I’d try really hard exercise routines, force myself to go to the gym, or go on a diet, this time things seemed to work themselves out. I chose exercise that I liked, did it at the time that felt right, and fell in love with the feeling. Now, my body craves exercise—a feeling I never thought I’d experience—and I do experience this incredible sense of vitality. Most days it feels like electric currents are running through my body, or like I’ve chugged an entire pot of espresso.
How do you want to feel in 2018?
Maybe you want to feel wiser or a deeper connection to your family and your community. Maybe you want to feel more open or free. Whatever it is, let that guide your goal-setting process.
I am an affiliate for Danielle Laporte, because even though I’m not a woo-woo spiritual “gangster”, I LOVE her stuff. Plus, gotta support my fellow Canadians!
Do you want to hear about what’s going on with Own Up Grown-Up in 2018? This fledgling is ready to take flight. Now that I better understand where this is all going, I’m going to dive a little deeper. That means there is going to be some meatier content coming your way next year. I’m specifically interested in looking at ways people are achieving a work-life balance around the world. “Work from Home (or Anywhere)”—did you get your free chapter yet?—was a jumping-off point to a larger project I’m going to start putting together in the next few weeks.
Stay tuned and if you know someone who should be featured on the blog or podcast because they have found an interesting way to achieve a work-life balance, then send them to the application.
And lastly, have you heard about Steemit? It’s a blockchain social media platform I’ve been trying out and I’m already a big fan. I’m still playing with it but check it out if you’re tired of Facebook and Twitter and you’re looking for something free of distracting ads.
